Sophie Kinya is a quiet force of vision—an artist whose medium just happens to be fashion. While many recognize her for the visuals, the titles, and the name SOPHÁYA Studio, there’s a deeper narrative at play—one built from family, faith in her dreams, and an early exposure to the richness of art and culture.
Raised in Meru, Sophie’s upbringing was filled with music, fashion, and a support system that nurtured her creativity. School leadership roles like entertainment prefect gave her early confidence, while fashion TV and red carpet shows planted a seed that never left. On the first day of high school, she declared she’d become a fashion designer—and never looked back.

Her work today is deeply editorial. Each piece begins with a concept or story, shaped through mood boarding and sketching, then brought to life in visual form. She approaches fashion as art first, functionality second. Through SOPHÁYA Studio, she offers wearable but bold pieces—elevated basics that maintain her distinct creative voice, rooted in African culture and storytelling.
The creative process, she shares, always starts with the narrative. From there, it’s a matter of choosing what leads—whether it’s silhouette, color, texture, or composition. Every step, from crafting to the final shoot, is a collaborative effort. For Sophie, community is part of the art.
SOPHÁYA itself is more than a brand—it’s a personal mission. She launched it to connect with people through what they wear. Artisanal, consciously crafted, proudly Kenyan. For Sophie, there’s power in wearing something made in Africa, and even more in being part of a generation that redefines what Afro-luxury looks like on the world stage.

Her Kenyan identity is not a detail—it’s the foundation. It shapes her work’s aesthetic and purpose. It also pushes her to amplify local artistry and create something that speaks both inward and outward: proudly African, boldly modern.
Among the milestones that stand out in her journey is the ARDHI collection—SOPHÁYA’s first major release, which took years to refine and relaunch.

Another high point is her editorial project Passion and Power, a story that resonated far beyond social media and earned a feature in Lolwe, a Pan-African literary magazine.

Still, balancing design, storytelling, and artistic direction hasn’t come easy. Sophie describes it as “doing a lot, lol”—a lighthearted truth many multidisciplinary creatives will relate to. But with time and collaboration, she’s learned to navigate the rhythm of it all. Her dream is to eventually grow SOPHÁYA into a full creative studio with a team, so she can focus on what she loves most: creating.
Like many independent artists, the lack of resources has been a challenge. Starting a brand requires more than vision—it takes strategy, relationships, and a willingness to work within constraints. Sophie’s learned the value of building a network, offering mutual support, and showing up consistently, even when the conditions aren’t perfect.

At the heart of it all is how her work makes people feel. She wants it to inspire—whether it sparks boldness, reflection, or simply the permission to be. Through her pieces, she hopes people feel seen and powerful, and that they recognize the thought and craftsmanship behind each creation.
Right now, her energy is fully on SOPHÁYA Studio. It’s the core of everything—every project, every collaboration, every long night and early morning. She’s excited to keep working with creatives across disciplines and put Kenyan talent where it belongs: on the global stage.

And to young creatives still finding their voice, Sophie’s advice is refreshingly simple: start. Don’t wait for perfect. Overthinking can be a trap, and imposter syndrome doesn’t get to define the journey. Even the awkward, messy beginnings eventually become part of the story you’ll be proud to tell.
