Unbroken Spirit: Atuhaire’s Campaign Against Tanzanian Injustice

Warning: This article includes descriptions of sexual assault.

In May 2025, Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire, experienced a horrible ordeal in Tanzania that challenged her unwavering will, alongside Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi, as they attempted to support opposition leader Tundu Lissu in his treason trial. On May 18, they arrived in Dar es Salaam to attend Lissu’s court hearing. He was facing potential death penalty charges. Unfortunately, they were denied entry and arrested the next day at the Serena Hotel by immigration and police authorities, who took them to a secret location for four days of incommunicado detention and torture by Tanzanian state security personnel.

Atuhaire shared her traumatic experience with the BBC on May 24, recounting how plainclothes officers blindfolded her, violently stripped her, and sexually assaulted her, saying, “The pain was too much,” as she showed a scar from tightly bound handcuffs, while Mwangi, held nearby, faced threats of circumcision and recalled being forced to crawl and wash off blood after torture.

On May 22, after four days of torture, Atuhaire was abandoned at the Mutukula border, 1,500 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. She was visibly shaken and bearing signs of torture. Mwangi was discovered on a roadside near the Kenyan border, also showing marks of abuse. Uganda’s high commissioner to Tanzania, Fred Mwesigye, confirmed Atuhaire had “safely returned home” and was “warmly received by her family.” Tanzanian authorities, however, offered no comment on the activists’ ordeal.

Regional rights groups, including Atuhaire’s Agora Centre for Research and VOCAL Africa, condemned the mistreatment. CEO Hussein Khalid cited a pattern of suppression by East African countries ahead of Tanzania’s 2025 elections, a concern shared by the US Department of State and Amnesty International, which called for a thorough investigation (citizentv) Despite Tanzanian authorities’ silence and President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s warning against foreign activists “meddling” in her country, Atuhaire’s courage as a 2024 International Women of Courage Awardee motivates us to advocate for justice in our communities.
