4Mr Frank White has delivered an ambition anthem through his latest release, Money Up. The single serves as both encouragement and a celebration of hard work. His ability to blend Afro-Swing, lyrical Kenyan Hip Hop, and sheng’s influences has shone through in the three years since his debut album, Definition: Real One. The Kahawa West native went to a National Game Park to shoot this music video, setting the commemoration mood. He released a reel vibing to the track on Instagram, soon after officially releasing the visualizer.

He begins the song stating his priorities loud and clear: “Kama story si ya ganji, can we kindly just summarize? Tubonge mkwanja njo kitu me nadai sahii / Nadai mula so nakamia bread.” Basically he says if we aren’t talking money, why are we talking? I adore his affirmation of success that follows: “Sijaclaim things, but this is my year, 44 kwenye map, hao wangoje next year, uh, ma opp boy wametulia / Sina noma na mafala hali tunawajulia.” The Afro Swing beat’s rythm pairs well with the contrasting booming 808 bassline, serving a sweet dish completed by 4Mr Frank White’s laid back flow.

The chorus repeats the following line: “I made my money up mambleina nawakazia, I made my money up mamwere nawachania, I made my money up (X4.)” It has the key characteristics of hit choruses: catchiness and memorability. He also pays homage to Chris Kantai, the late pioneer of Kenyan rap, Chris Kantai, to begin the 2nd verse: “Tushacut ties kama Chris Kantai, RIP top G, you know a legend never died.” His preparedness is declared a couple of lines later: “Wakiuliza, ‘Next step?’ Nawashow, “Mambo ready / Mayday, mayday, nasema mambo ready.” He declares he knows people copy his flow, while switching his flow: “Hawa swela wanacopy my flow, wash them boys kama dobe my bro.”

I enjoy how he increases his pace slightly as he continues: “Nafanya 10 tips, alafu maybe I might go, nikona beef na mafala nipate Kiamaiko, or, I might risk it / Niingie niibe, drop but wanapenda free things.” His independent mentality shows in the rhyme that follows: “I got my own hakuna kitu me nadandia, nishamake peace with my own, we are done here.” The chorus plays once more, then we get an extra couple of lines: “Super drippy with my family, na tushabreak banks, we si gangsta ya kutosha, ati half way charged / Ma selective bad boys, wanazingua, tukikam kwa bando, wanapungua.”

Conclusion

4Mr Frank White’s Money Up is a truimphant song that gives one a motivational boost to put in that extra hour of work. The theme of persistence is spelt out loud and clear throughout. The production was on point, with the upbeat tempo of the beat creating a celebratory mood. A couple of words in some lines were undiscernable, such as in the 1st verse for example. The video quality could also have been better. However, the song is a great addition to your playlist for those happy days. His lyricism is as sharp as ever and I cannot wait for his next project. In my opinion, it is a solid 7.5 rating. Read another article here.
