
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to become both a barber and a model?
Wagio Karanja is a 24 year old mum to a 9 year old baby girl.
Being a teen mum inspired me to try out different kinds of jobs.
What was the initial spark that got you interested in the barbering industry and how did you start your journey?
During covid-19 we all adapted to different ways of living hence most people losing their jobs, I started my journey in Syokimau as a shampoo girl in a barbershop
Modelling and barbering are both visually focused professions. How do they complement each other in your career?
I love looking good and making people look good, that makes my work easier in both fields.
I also get to interact with different kinds of people which I really enjoy.
What challenges have you faced as a woman working in a traditionally male-dominated profession like barbering?
The main challenge is actually getting a client to understand that you can actually fix them so the convincing bit mainly, also as a lady you might face some harassment from men. This becomes very uncomfortable at times.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement that has significantly shaped your career?
When I started working in a barbershop and started giving haircuts I’ll always remember my first client and how he kept pushing me to do better, I also started making more money as a barber which made my life easier, it’s always fulfilling. This also earned me a few interviews too,
Have you encountered stereotypes or misconceptions in either field? How do you handle them?
Yes of course the misconceptions are there but I expected that initially so I used the negative to push forward, just face it chin up.
What skills or qualities do you believe are essential to excel as a barber? How about as a model?
Consistency and discipline for both, one has to be form in both areas.

How do you balance creativity and technique when styling a client’s hair?
You have to understand your clients hair and their preference, it’s always a bit tricky with first time clients but you get a hang of it.
What’s your favorite hairstyle trend or look to create and why?
I really love working with color so anything that involves a nice fade and a vibrant color always excites me.
How do you incorporate your sense of style and personality into your work, both as a barber and a model?
Well, it’s easy I’m just me and in both fields I get to express myself, I love when I’m given complete creative control.
Are there any specific fashion or beauty trends you feel passionate about advocating for?
As the plus size girlie I am, I feel like we should embrace all our curves and crevices.
Who are some of the people or role models that inspire you in both industries?
There’s one barber I do follow on called Sly Huncho and Christiana, I really admire their work.
What keeps you motivated to push boundaries and grow your profession?
Well one no one likes being broke, I also love the freedom that comes with being your own boss.
What advice would you give to young women who aspire to break into barbering or modeling?
Keep pushing and don’t listen to the negatives, use them to fuel yourself and push harder.

How do you think social media has influenced your career and how do You use it to engage with your audience?
Social media has been a great help as I specialized my craft from it.
What are your goals for the future in both barbering and modelling?
To open a second shop and to ensure our girls are given better opportunities in both industries without being exploited.
Is there a dream project or collaboration you hope to be a part of one day?
